So it was happening, ha? Apparently, I could only be a one-man army for a while without failing.

Something had struck me on the back of the head. One of the assassins had produced it. It was a weapon the likes of which I had never seen before. While ostensibly it looked like nothing more than an electro blade, it sure as heck didn’t strike home like one. It… I don’t know, I guess it shifted through things. My scanners couldn’t pick it up. And they had absolutely no clue what damage it had done to the back of my helmet. The only thing that was certain was that the damage was severe. It was also getting worse. It was almost spreading like a virus. These cracks appeared over the back of my helmet, and they were getting faster. They were also getting bigger. If I was struck again – and trust me, I would be – I wouldn’t have any chance. They would reach right through to my skull beneath. And let me tell you, they would not be kind when they reached my tender flesh.

I pushed up from my knees. I couldn’t just hang out there, clutching at the back of my helmet forever. That would be an invitation to be stabbed through the heart.

I was facing off against eight assassins. You read that right. Eight of them. One was holding that strange modified electro blade. The rest of them just had guns in their hands. One had a whip. He was particularly bad. I’d been trying to stay out of his way when that other guy had struck me on the back of the head with that blade.

Now I had to avoid everyone and everything. Fortunately I had taken this fight to a wider section of the corridor. It was just before the rusty old ladder that led down to the rest of the ship.

I thought nothing of turning and jumping. Just as I threw myself off it, that whip came out of nowhere, collected around my ankle, and yanked me to the side. I was smashed into the wall. To be fair, it would’ve been a devastating blow had I not been in armor. But I was. And this armor, even if it was damaged, should protect me from something like that. But as I impacted the wall, I heard exactly what I did not want to. There was an almighty crack at the back of my helmet. It sounded and felt as if someone had just opened my skull like an egg.

A warning alarm had a chance to blare across my visor, then nothing. Everything stopped. My armor was obviously too damaged to work anymore.

My eyes had a chance to pulse wide open. This was it. I know I’d said that before, but this honestly had to be it. Because I had no way of fighting these assassins without functional armor.

The guy holding the whip yanked me higher. I was going to smash into the ceiling.
